Axis: A Monolithic Apartment Block with Stunning Views

Residential Development by dhk Architects

Axis is an off-white, sculpted apartment block that was conceived as a monolith with indentations and cut-outs. Elements of Axis are embedded in abstract narratives paying homage to classic literature; from the crown-shaped crescendo to the three urban courts, while conversely responding to contentious aspects of the realities of apartment living. For example, the large gestural cuts and gashes in the building offer views of Robben Island, Intaka Island and Tygerberg Hills; allowing for stunning outward views even from the innermost crevices of the building.

Axis, designed by dhk Architects, is a unique residential development that stands out in Cape Town's architectural landscape. This off-white apartment block is a sculptural masterpiece, with its monolithic form and strategic indentations and cut-outs. The design of Axis is inspired by classic literature, with abstract narratives woven into its architecture.

One of the standout features of Axis is its ability to offer breathtaking views from every corner of the building. The large cuts and gashes in the structure provide glimpses of Robben Island, Intaka Island, and Tygerberg Hills, creating a sense of connection with the surrounding natural beauty. Even the innermost crevices of the building offer stunning outward views, making every apartment a privileged vantage point.

Axis comprises 85 luxury residential apartments and penthouses, complemented by small-scale commercial and retail spaces on the ground level. The building's compact form gradually rises, orientating most of the apartments towards picturesque views of Cape Town's CBD, Table Mountain, and the Atlantic Ocean. This strategic orientation ensures that residents can enjoy the best of the city's natural and urban landscapes.

The realization of Axis involved the use of innovative technology and materials. The unique doughnut-shaped form is adorned with visual gashes that allow the sheltered walkway spaces to catch glimpses of the city around it, creating a seamless connection between the interior and exterior. The facade of the building is wrapped in satin off-white aluminum composite panels, adding to its contemporary aesthetic.

At the heart of Axis is a deep fissure, created by the negative space resulting from the building form wrapping on itself. This 30m x 13m space acts as a light chasm, capturing the north light and delivering it to even the lowest floors. The internal courtyard features a textured white-painted face brick fenestration, designed to complement the sleek external cladding.

Axis is not just a visually stunning architectural marvel; it also offers a unique living experience. The building features a public urban plaza as a forecourt and arrival space, enhancing the sense of community and connectivity. A panoramic lift runs the full height of the building, providing residents with a breathtaking journey through the different levels. Each apartment has been meticulously designed to optimize views, light, and space, with ample external terraces to enhance the living experience.

Axis is located in the Bridgeways Precinct in Century City, Cape Town. Construction of this landmark development started in March 2017 and was completed in November 2018. The design of Axis required careful research and creative problem-solving. The use of aluminum composite panels was a key element in achieving the monolithic appearance, with the play of sunlight and shadows adding depth and articulation to the building.

The challenges faced during the design and construction of Axis were overcome with innovative solutions. The architects and engineers devised a "belt beam" detail that wrapped around the entire building on the first floor, creating the illusion of a floating monolith. The facade system was meticulously coordinated with the window openings, resulting in a complex randomized fenestration appearance.

Axis, designed by dhk Architects, is a testament to the power of innovative design and meticulous attention to detail. This monolithic apartment block offers a unique living experience with its stunning views, seamless connection to the surrounding environment, and high-quality finishes. It has set a new standard for urban conscious residential developments in Cape Town.
